This gorgeous tomato is from my dad’s garden. It is as delicious as it is beautiful. My dad is 87 and still planting and harvesting a major garden. He grows 15 varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant and zucchini. Doesn’t everyone? He also grows beets, bok choy, brussels sprouts, broccoli, butternut squash, carrots, 2 types of cabbage, cauliflower, kohlrabi, leeks, peppers, 3 types of onions, garlic, radishes (2 different kinds), green beans, lima beans and a few types of lettuce. (Dad, I’m sorry if I left anything out!)

While we were growing up, we would have fresh vegetables with dinner every night from May until November. He even grew arugula, corn and asparagus.  Arugula! Before it was A THING! I thought I had the strangest dad. What could he possibly like about arugula? I realize now I have an exceptional dad and I’m very proud of him.

The local newspaper published an article about him today. I’m so excited about it, I have to tell everyone! (Below is a picture of all the vegetables he has canned this season.  He’s not finished, yet. The paintings above the jars are by my mom! )

Beautiful post, beautiful article! Kyra said it best– a real tribute to a wonderful grandfather!

  2. I have vivid memories of the big salad bowls when I had dinner at your house. Your Dad always had the biggest bowl. I loved sleeping over your house. I always looked forward to our hike to David’s Cookies (but I digress!).I also remember a huge and beautiful vegetable garden in your backyard. Your mother’s beautiful artwork really compliments the jarred vegetables. So much talent in your family! Gigi xoxo

Your father has the most impressive garden I’ve ever seen! It’s probably why your parents are both so young…..is all those great vegetables they eat! You go Murray and Charlotte.
Congrats on the article and for sharing your bounty with others, Murray!

That is amazing. Farm to table before there was such a thing. Next time we go shopping, let’s do it at your parents canning shop. It all looks so fantastic and I wouldn’t mind some gardening tips, too.
